9 August 2008, Houston TX, USA Mahmoud Darwish was born on 13 March 1941 in the village of Birwa (Acre district) to Salim Darwish and Huriyya al-Biqa‘i. He was the second child in a family of five boys and three girls. Mahmoud Darwish, the second born of Mrs.Houreyyah Darwish and her husband Mr. Salim’s eight children, was born on 13th March 1941 in Western Galilee in a village called Al-Birwa. This village was, however, razed and destroyed by the Israeli Army in 1984 to prevent its residents from going back to their homes inside the new Jewish state. I thought this week, we could look at some شِعْر عَرَبي Arabic poetry by the well- known Palestinian national poet محمود درويش Mahmoud Darwish. When learning a foreign language, it can seem overwhelming to dive into poetry or literature in that language. Darwish assumes the voice of the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad, to chastise the Arab regimes for abandoning the Palestinians and the Lebanese to the Israeli onslaught.
